What are you or your kids going to be for Halloween this year?
As you debate this yearly question, we want to remind you to choose with caution.
Children's costumes can be dangerous.
Halloween is about cute costumes, but combined with decorations, there's potential for flame.
FOX 32 put costumes to the test at the Chicago Firefighter Training Academy using a lighter to find the flammability of different fabrics.
One of the most dangerous costumes out there is a cotton sheet
"I can't stress enough, cotton burns too hot, too quick, you don't have reaction time. you're susceptible to serious injury,” CFD Training Commander George Dowling said.
And it's not just kids’ costumes, accessories can catch fire, too.
Experts say consumers are confused about flame retardant and flame resistant labels.
“It will catch fire, put itself out. the misconception is it won't catch, but that is not the case, it will catch fire,” Dowling said.
So this Halloween, don't use candles, choose non-natural or treated fabrics for costumes. Don't get burned.
