Chicago protesters block traffic during rush hour

CHICAGO (FOX 32 / AP) - A small but boisterous crowd demonstrating against police misconduct protested Friday during rush hour traffic in Chicago.

"It's our civic duty to make Chicago a better place for all citizens," one man said.

Demonstrations have been held almost daily since the city released graphic squad car video last month showing a white police officer fatally shooting a black teenager in 2014.

"The end game is simple. We got to make sure the Department of Justice comes in and does a sweeping investigation," said Cook County Commissioner Richard Boykin.

Protests have called for the resignations of Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Cook County State's Attorney Anita Alvarez. The rallies have been largely peaceful.

By Friday evening the crowd was small but determined, blocking traffic on downtown streets.

Laquan McDonald's great uncle, surrounded by other family members, also sent a message Friday to President Obama.

"Mr. President, I want you to send a representative from the White House to North Lawndale to convene a White House summit on gun violence and urban poverty and police brutality," said Reverend Marvin Hunter.

Chicago police spokesman Thomas Sweeney says he hasn't been notified of any arrests related to the protests as of Friday evening.
