Chicagoans react to France terror attack

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) - The news of the attack in nice is devastating for French people living in Chicago.

Many of them were also celebrating Bastile Day as details of the attacks unfolded.  

"It's very sad, it sounds like terrorism and it's another wack at the French people. But, we have our resolve. I'm American, but I'm with the French,” said David Reithoffer.

Bastille Day is a French national holiday of independence.

Many in Chicago continued the celebration after the attack unfolded, and some were still unaware of the tragedy that took place just hours before in nice.

In Lincoln Park, French Bistro Chez Moi displayed the French flag colors proudly outside.

The restaurant inside was packed as owner Chef Dominique Toungne reflected on the tragedy with his customers.

Chef Dominique was born and raised in the northeastern France.

“It's a big attack against our values and I think it's more than just French values. I think it goes all over the place It's just people that want to live in peace and be able to do whatever they want and have the freedom to do whatever they want,” Chef Dominique said.

The chef has spent time in nice and is trying to wrap his mind around how someone could plow down people who were enjoying the night, watching fireworks.

"Coming from France, I know that people go there with their kids. There are probably a lot of kids that lost their lives and their parents. It's traumatic. It's absolutely traumatic,” Chef Dominique said.
