Chicagoans react to Orlando shooting

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) - Chicagoans are reacting to the shooting in Orlando this weekend.  Vigils were held in the Boystown and Andersonville neighborhoods Sunday night where hundreds gathered to remember and honor the lives lost.

Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson made an appearance at the vigil held at the corner of Halsted and Roscoe and spoke about the increase in patrols and his department’s commitment to protect the community.

Increased patrols started Sunday in Chicago neighborhoods Lakeview, Lincoln Park and Boystown.  Still, some told us Sunday they are nervous about everyday life and Pride festivals coming up later this month in the city.

“I've never felt safe as a gay person never in my life," said Art Johnston, co-owner of Sidetrack bar and gay rights activist, who added extra security at his establishment Sunday afternoon.

The CEO of Equality Illinois said he’s not scared going forward.

“I believe deeply in the arc of justice in Illinois and in our country and I know we are moving toward a place where we are even more safe and more equal," said Brian Johnson.

More vigils and events are being planned for this week in Chicago.

The annual Pride festival is next weekend with the Pride parade the following weekend.
