CHICAGO (AP) -- Chicago police say an officer who fatally shot a man and an innocent bystander -- and who later filed a lawsuit alleging the shooting left him traumatized -- was inadvertently put back on street duty for four months before the mistake was discovered.

The Chicago Tribune reports Robert Rialmo made or assisted in 10 arrests before he was placed back on paid desk duty last month.

Rialmo fired at 19-year-old Quintonio LeGrier last December after police say the teen charged at him with a baseball bat. LeGrier was killed as was 55-year-old bystander Bettie Jones.

Rialmo filed an unusual lawsuit claiming he fired his weapon in part because he was poorly trained and that the shooting caused him permanent emotional trauma.

Chicago Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi says putting Rialmo back on street duty was a "careless and irresponsible" error.
