CPD release video of dramatic effort to free hostage

Chicago police have released dramatic new video showing how they ended a hostage situation and rescued the victim.

Police acted quickly back in April, working to bring a conclusion to what they say was a hostage situation -- a man taking a woman at gun point during a break-in.

The city's Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) released a series of videos Monday, showing the situation unfold.

In April, police responded to an apartment on the Near West Side where they say a 23-year-old woman was being held. Police say 19-year-old Marcos Malvais dragged the woman into a bathroom in the basement.

At one point in a video, you hear a single gunshot before police make their way downstairs where Sergeant Joseph Menoni's body camera shows the woman being dragged, with him later saying in a report that Malvais pointed a handgun in his direction. The sergeant’s camera cut off at that point.

Other videos show Malvais being taken into custody. He was arrested on a number of felony charges, including attempted murder. His alleged victim was treated at a hospital.

Malvais remains behind bars after pleading not guilty.
