Emanuel calls gang threat against Chicago police 'unacceptable'

- Mayor Rahm Emanuel is calling the alleged plot by gang members to shoot Chicago police "unacceptable.” It's a plot that came to light after the release of the videos of the shooting of Paul O'Neal.

The shooting of Paul O’Neal brings back the pain for the mother of Quintonio Legrier, who was shot and killed by police last December. She also says the threat to shoot police will only make the situation worse.

Janet Cooksey lives with the painful outcome of another chaotic night, when her son Quintonio Legrier was shot and killed by police after officers responded to a domestic situation. But she says a plot by three gangs to target west side police officers is wrong.

“I know we are all angry, but not every police officer is a bad officer and we're not helping the problem by adding to the problem,” Cooksey said.

Cooksey says she once felt like she wanted to hurt the police after her son was killed, but she believes the gang plot, if carried out, could lead to more police shootings.

The mayor called the gang threat out of line.

“It is totally unacceptable that gangs are meeting and talking about targeting police officers of the city of Chicago as victims of violence, given that they've given their lives protecting the rest of us from any crime and or violence,” Mayor Emanuel said.

Cooksey said she believes that the police superintendent is trying to change the culture and repair police community relations, and if officers were shot it would completely undermine that effort.

“We have to give them a chance, it's slow coming because it's a big problem,” Cooksey said.

The mayor went a step further.

“I've asked before when this was bubbling up post what happened in Dallas and Baton Rouge (for) people to go out and thank an officer in your neighborhood and community. I ask you to do that again,” Cooksey said.

Police told FOX 32 that they have received no new intelligence related to the threat. But officer remain on extra alert.
