Endangered crowned lemur born at Lincoln Park Zoo

It’s a baby animal bonanza on the North Side as the Lincoln Park Zoo welcomed its third new primate of the spring over the weekend.

A crowned lemur was born Sunday at the zoo and joins mother Tucker, father Sokkwi, and siblings Sava, 2; and Volana, 1, according to a statement from the zoo. The baby’s sex and measurements have not yet been determined because Tucker is keeping the infant wrapped very close to her belly.

“With any birth, our animal care staff carefully monitors the new arrival to ensure they are passing critical milestones,” curator of primates Maureen Leahy said in the statement.

“The infant is holding tight to mother and regularly nursing which is exactly what we’d hope to see,” Leahy said.

Crowned lemurs, which are native to Madagascar, are considered endangered because of forest loss, according to the zoo. They are named for the gold crown-like coloration on their heads.

The newest arrival is already on exhibit with its family at the Helen Brach Primate House, daily 10 a.m.-5 p.m.

Visitors can also see the zoo’s other spring babies — two snow monkeys born since March 18.
