Family of woman fatally shot by Chicago Police sues city

CHICAGO (STMW) - The family of Bettie Ruth Jones, who was shot to death by Chicago Police the day after Christmas, filed a wrongful-death lawsuit Monday against the city of Chicago.

Latarsha and Latisha Jones alleges wrongful death and intentional infliction of emotional distress in a lawsuit filed in Cook County Circuit Court.

Jones and Quintonio LeGrier, 19, were shot and killed by an officer responding to a domestic disturbance call LeGrier’s father made from the building he owned in the 4700 block of West Erie early on Dec. 26.

The elder LeGrier called Jones and told her police had been called and asked that she answer the door when they arrived, according to the lawsuit.

She then “faced a hail of bullets being fired by an on-duty Chicago Police Department officer at and in the direction of her home and her, with bullets going through the doorway, and through the walls of her home where her 19 y/o twin daughter Latisha Jones and others were located,” according to the suit.

An officer then told Latisha Jones as she asked for assistance for her mother, who was still lying on the floor, that “her mother was dead and she needed to ‘get over it,’” according to the suit.

According to a statement issued by Chicago Police the day of the shooting, responding officers “were confronted by a combative subject resulting in the discharging of the officer’s weapon which fatally wounded two individuals.”

“The 55-year-old female victim was accidentally struck and tragically killed. The department extends its deepest condolences to the victim’s family and friends,” according to the statement.

The two-count lawsuit seeks at least $100,000 in damages.

A spokesman for the city’s law department did not immediately respond to a request for comment about the lawsuit.
