Female officers file discrimination lawsuit against Markham Police
MARKHAM, Ill. (AP) - Four female police officers in the Chicago suburb of Markham have alleged gender discrimination in complaints filed with the Illinois Department of Human Rights.
The Daily Southtown reports the complaints follow Terry White's promotion to chief of police last year and were filed between February and May.
The female officers represent the majority of women on the suburban police force.
They make several allegations against White, including that he demoted them, took them off special assignments and disrespected them. One complaint alleges White called her "dumb on account of being a woman."
White declined the newspaper's questions about the allegations, as did Mayor Roger Agpawa. They released a statement which says the matter will be "resolved through the proper channels and not the media."
