Five critically injured in rollover crash in Pilsen

CHICAGO (STMW) - Five people were critically injured in a rollover crash early Sunday in the Pilsen neighborhood.

The two-vehicle crash between a Cadillac Escalade and Nissan Altima happened at 12:10 a.m. in the 2000 block of West 18th Street, according to Chicago Fire Department Cmdr. Walter Schroeder and Chicago Police.

The northbound Cadillac Escalade was at a stop light on South Damen Avenue when it was struck by the eastbound Nissan Altima that ran a red light on West 18th Street, police said.

The Cadillac Escalade rolled on its side, and the Nissan Altima ended up on a sidewalk, police said.

One of the vehicles struck a tree and rolled over, Schroeder said. Two people were pinned in that vehicle and had to be extricated.

In all, five people were taken to the hospital in serious-to-critical condition, Schroeder said. Two people went to Mount Sinai Hospital, while three went to Stroger Hospital.
