Funeral held for murdered family of 6

CHICAGO (FOX 32 news) -- A community said goodbye this weekend to the six family members murdered in their home more than a week ago.  Hundreds of people filled a church on Chicago’s Southwest Side to pay their respects to members of the Martinez and Cruz families.

Chicago police found the six bodies inside the family home in the Gage Park neighborhood on February 4th. Noe and Rosaura Martinez, siblings Noe Jr. and Maria and her two sons Leonardo and Alexis Cruz - all stabbed to death, except Maria who died of multiple gunshot wounds.

It's been more than a week and still the mystery remains on who did this and why, but Sunday wasn't about the investigation - instead the community remembered the victims.

It was an emotional scene inside St. Gall Catholic Parish as hundreds of people - friends, family and strangers - filed in to pay their respects. The crowd walked past all six caskets - a reminder of just how horrific the crime was.

“This is horrible, this is horrible,” said family friend Martha Martinez. “I hope they find who did this. They didn't deserve that.”

Before the Sunday night mass, the victim's family members wanted to thank Chicago for the love and support they've felt.  They spoke to the media through a translator.

“He says that Chicago has been his hometown, Chicago gave him his family and Chicago has taken away his family and he is taking them with him to Mexico,” said the translator for Armando Cruz. He is the father of the two boys.

Violetta Martinez is now the only surviving member of the Martinez family - she lost her parents, brother, sister and nephews.

“She was saying that her parents are wonderful people and that they were a very loving family,” said the translator for Martinez.

Friends of the family, like Bryan Arroyo, are still shaken to the core about the gruesome crime.

“I can't believe it happened, especially in my community,” said Arroyo. “I'm scared to walk around now.”

The bodies will not be buried in Chicago. The family plans to take the bodies back to Mexico for burial there.

Police are still investigating these murders and don’t have a suspect in custody.
