Gold Star parents, Khizr and Ghazala Khan, speak in Rosemont

- Gold Star parents and brief rivals of Donald Trump, Khizr and Ghazala Kahn spoke Saturday in northwest suburban Rosemont.

Best known for speaking at the Democratic National Convention, the couple addressed the Islamic Society of North American convention.

The couple talked about the attention they've received since speaking at the convention, the importance of voting and choosing love over hate.

The Kahns became a household name after taking aim at the Republican Presidential candidate during the convention.

“Have you even read the United States Constitution?” Khizr Kahn asked Trump during the convention. “I will gladly lend you my copy."

Trump fired back turning the attention to Ghazala Kahn suggesting she didn't speak on stage due to religious reasons.  She said her emotions about her army captain son's death that kept her quiet.

“We have moved on from this back and forth and answering to negativity,” said Khizr Kahn.

Speaking at the Islamic Society of North America convention Ghazala shared how their lives have gone from private to public.

“I feel so close to all of you guys that you can’t imagine that I have given one son and I got that many back - thank you very much,” said Ghazala.

Khizr showed off his pocket Constitution while addressing the media saying it was worth going public to give a voice to Muslim-Americans.

“We may not have the solutions to the issues, but at least we were able to start the conversation,” said Khizr Kahn.

The couple said they are so grateful to share their son's story and help stop the spread of Islamophobia.

“Wherever I go, people's eyes full of tears the faces full of love,” said Ghazala Kahn to the crowd of about 800. “It was so beautiful looking at those eyes and faces that you can just thank God that you were there to say something. People have written us that it was like someone has thrown cold water on us and we are awoken.”

The Kahns said their mission is to spread the message of love, civility and political involvement.
