Indiana State Police corporal revives man having heart attack

LOWELL, Ind. (STMW) - An Indiana State Police corporal revived a man who suffered a heart attack outside a police station in northwest Indiana on Monday afternoon.

At 12:30 p.m., Rick Thacker ran into the ISP station in Lowell and told Cpl. Dan Becker that a passenger in his car was having a heart attack, according to a statement from ISP.

Becker grabbed a defibrillator and ran out to the parking lot, where he saw German Rivera, 75, of Florida, seated in the front passenger seat with another passenger giving him rescue breaths.

After he found that Rivera was not breathing and did not have a pulse, Becker applied the AED pads and administered a shock, ISP said. Rivera did not show signs of life, so Becker began CPR. He then administered another shock when prompted by the AED, and Rivera began to moan. Becker rechecked Rivera’s pulse and found he had one.

Becker stayed with Rivera, monitoring his pulse and breathing, until Tri-Creek emergency personnel arrived and took Rivera to St. Anthony’s Hospital in Crown Point, Ind. The Lowell station is about 5 miles southwest of Crown Point in Lake County.
