Large sheet of ice falls 40 stories from Chicago building

Pedestrians in downtown Chicago were reminded Monday afternoon of a common issue during the winter – falling ice.

A large sheet of ice fell 40 stories from the top of the 1 South Wacker building and coated the sidewalk in shards of ice.

Building and city crews blocked the sidewalk for the rest of the day and put up barricades, directing foot traffic from the sidewalk to the right lane of Wacker drive.

More ice could be spotted falling from the top of the building Monday night.

Several businesses on the ground level had to close their Wacker drive entrances following the falling ice.
