CHICAGO (Sun Times Media Wire) -- A 26-year-old man drowned in the McKinley Park Lagoon while trying to rescue his dog Saturday afternoon on the Southwest Side.

Paramedics were called about 1 p.m. to 2210 West Pershing Road for a man who fell through thin ice into the water, according to Chicago Fire Department Chief Juan Hernandez. They pulled him and his dog out.

The 26-year-old, identified as Tao Jiang, was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital but died within the hour, Chicago police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office said. He lived in the Southwest Side Brighton Park neighborhood.

The dog survived, authorities said. An autopsy to determine Jiang’s cause of death was scheduled for Sunday.
