Mayor Emanuel, CPS announce every classroom will be air conditioned by spring 2017

Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Chicago Public Schools leadership Monday announced that the District’s comprehensive air conditioning plan will be completed by spring 2017, which is one year ahead of the project’s scheduled completion date. Since 2011, the City of Chicago and CPS have made $135 million in investments to provide air conditioning to 222 schools. The remaining 61 schools without air conditioning will receive air conditioning by spring 2017.

“Chicago’s children deserve classrooms that are comfortable, safe and modern – and accelerating our air-conditioning investments is the right thing to do for our students,” Mayor Emanuel said. “I’m pleased that CPS is investing in much-needed building projects to make sure that all our students can go to class in air-conditioned learning environments that will help them succeed.”

In 2014, Mayor Emanuel and CPS initiated a large-scale plan to bring air conditioning to all CPS classrooms, after installing air conditioning in 70 schools the previous summer. The project was scheduled to be completed in 2018, but the plan has been accelerated to ensure every CPS student will attend class in an air-conditioned classroom before spring 2017.

“As a former principal and educator, I know the importance of making sure that every CPS student can learn and grow in an educational environment that prepares them for success,” said CPS Chief Education Officer Dr. Janice K. Jackson. “By air conditioning all of our classrooms, we are helping to provide students in every part of the city have access to comfortable classrooms that will allow them to reach their potential.”
