More than 100 flights canceled after Wednesday morning snowfall

CHICAGO (STMW) - More than 100 flights have been canceled at O’Hare and Midway airports for the third day in a row Wednesday after snow started falling during the morning commute.

At O’Hare, nearly 100 flights have been canceled and delays were averaging 20 minutes for all flights as of 3:30 p.m., according to the city’s Department of Aviation.

A United Airlines flight skidded off a runway just before 8 a.m. at O’Hare. United Flight 1977, a Boeing 737-900 that had taken off from Seattle, landed at O’Hare at 7:55 a.m. and slid off the end of Runway 27-Right, according to the FAA. No injuries were reported.

“Due to the runway conditions, the aircraft did not or could not make the runway’s turnoff point onto the taxiway,” United spokesman Charlie Hobart said.

At Midway, fewer than 10 flights were canceled and delays were averaging 15 minutes for inbound flights.

On Monday, more than 1,600 flights were canceled at the city’s airports and an additional 300 flights were canceled Tuesday after a wintry mix hit the city.

Up to 1.5 inches of snow fell Wednesday on the North Side, according to weather service reports. The rest of the day is expected to be cloudy with a high hovering below freezing, according to the weather service. Some flurries are possible later Wednesday night.
