'National Night Out' in Chicago brings together communities, police

On Tuesday, cities throughout the Chicago area participated in ‘National Night Out.’ The events are a way for people to bond with police and send a message that they will not tolerate crime.

Humboldt Park has seen its fair share of crime so far this year, but Tuesday night was about the good in the community and building relationships with police.

"Showing that the police do care, that everybody cares,” said Nita Hailey-Campbell.

And not just in Chicago, but all over the country ‘National Night Out’ is being celebrated.

"This is the police across the country opportunity to show the community that we love them and we embrace them and we connect with them on an uphill battle that's trying to fight crime in the city,” said Daniel Allen of the 11th District.

Hundreds of people filled Kells Park on the West Side Tuesday night to rub shoulders with the men and women in blue.

“Good idea, so the community can get to know the police around in the area,” Campbell said.

The event in Humboldt Park is being sponsored by the 11th District Police. Sergeant Daniel Allen says this year’s ‘National Night Out’ is especially important with what's going on nationally, with some struggling to trust law enforcement.

The summer night out in the park was complete with music, face painting and games for kids.

Many that FOX 32 talked to say ‘National Night Out’ is a summer tradition, and they look forward to it every year, including the police officers that get to participate.

More than 16-thousand communities have these annual summer parties.
