Northwest Indiana, south suburbs buried by blizzard

LOWELL, Ind. (FOX 32 News) - The worst of the storm is behind us, but it didn't move out of our area before leaving it's mark across the south suburbs and Northwest Indiana. 

By early evening on Wednesday, Cedar Lake, Indiana topped the region with 13 inches of snow, according to the National Weather Service. Whitewashed roads and blizzard conditions forced the Porter County sheriff’s office to declare a state of emergency on their highways when snow plows couldn’t keep up with the snowfall.

County roads in Northwest Indiana were riddled with cars stuck in the snow. Some people near Lowell, Ind. abandoned their cars on the road, while others were towed out. 

Even snow plows had some difficulty navigating the icy and snowy roads. At least one snow plow got stuck. 

Road crews worked throughout the night Wednesday and into Thursday to clear the roads for your morning commute. And now. officials are warning drivers to take it slow due to the slick and icy conditions.

South Shore trains between Indiana and Chicago were suspended Thursday because the storm knocked out power to railroad crossing gates.
