One-year-old critically injured by falling TV on Near West Side

A one-year-old child was critically injured by a falling television set Thursday morning on the Near West Side.

It happened in the 1200 block of West Van Buren at 11:16 a.m., according to Chicago Police.

The infant was taken in critical condition to Stroger Hospital, police said.

As a parent, you always worry about your children.

“They're touching, they get into everything...unfortunately,” said parent John Callas.

Callas knows this all too well, chasing after his energetic 4-year-old daughter, Amalia. That’s why he was heartbroken when he heard about what happened to one of his neighbors in their Near West Side condo.

Other neighbors sympathized with the family as they learned about what happened.

"Little kids, they get out and about and they’re kind of rambunctious. But, it's still just sad to hear,” said neighbor Stephanie Williamson.

According to the consumer product safety commission, 38-thousand people are treated in emergency rooms every year for tip over accidents.

Most are young children, under the age of 5.

Experts recommend anchoring down top heavy furniture and securing TV's so tragedies like this don't happen.

It’s any parents worst nightmare.

“My heart goes out to that family,” Callas said.

One way experts say you can protect your young children is to purchase anti-tip straps, or kits for furniture and electronics. Most are inexpensive, running between 5 and 25 dollars.
