Woman dead after jumping into Calumet River from Chicago Skyway

CHICAGO (STMW) - A 54-year-old northwest Indiana woman died after jumping into the Calumet River from the Chicago Skyway Monday afternoon on the South Side.

The U.S. Coast Guard and Chicago Police responded to the river near the 3100 block of East 98th Street a few minutes after 1 p.m. after someone jumped into the river from the Skyway, authorities said.

Karen Lubas was pulled from the river and taken to Advocate Trinity Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 1:45 p.m., according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office. Lubas lived in Whiting, Indiana.

An autopsy found she died of multiple injuries from a fall from height, and drowning was listed as a contribution factor, according to the medical examiner’s office. Her death was ruled a suicide.
