CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -- Another brutal weekend in Chicago with at least 24 people shot, five of them killed, including a 29-year-old man shot and killed by Chicago police.

It happened Sunday around 4:40 a.m. in a West Englewood neighborhood when officers responded to calls of a home invasion.  Police say when they arrived in the 7300 block of south Paulina they found an ‘armed offender’ who opened fire and the officers fired back.

Family confirms the offender was Charles Smith, a father of two and Chicago rapper who goes by Fifmoney.

“We've been in this neighborhood all our lives. My brother was a lot of things, but he wasn't a bad guy,” said Smith’s brother, Bryan Woodlow.

Smith was killed in the shooting and no officers were hurt.  Police say a weapon was recovered at the scene.

“We can talk about police killing black people or killing people, but we need to talk about the black on black crime, that's going on too because it's just as prevalent as anything else and I think it's the core of the problem that we have in our city today,” said Woodlow.

The Independent Police Review Authority is investigating the shooting and a spokesperson tells Fox 32 that there is most likely no video of the incident.

Already this year close to 300 people have been shot and at least 50 people killed in city of Chicago.  Father Michael Pfleger of St. Sabina’s Church is an active voice against the violence and posted this message on his Facebook page Sunday morning:

In the First month of 2016.....Chicago starts out more violent than last year..which was higher than years before.......in 31 days 49 KILLED and 235 Wounded that averages more than 9 per day shot in the City....plus 6 Expressway shootings this month, more than doubling January last year.....While we fight against corrupt police we must also fight against those who are part of this self inflicted Genocide that is causing our neighborhoods to live in Fear. Yes, we must demand Jobs, Education, Economic Opportunity, Options and end this Easy Access to Guns, and yes we must Tell the Thousands of Churches that will gather today to pray that Faith without Works is still Dead.........‪#‎stopthekilling

“When people say to me 'I wish you would stop talking about all the shooting' my response is ‘I wish all the shooting would stop then I would have nothing to talk about,’” said Father Pfleger.

He said the murder rate should be an issue for everyone with shootings all over the city, in hotels and on expressways.

“When we are afraid to sit on our porch, afraid to go to school, afraid to go to the park and now we are afraid to drive on the expressway,” said Pfleger.  “So, either this fear is going to paralyze us or the fear is going to motivate us to say enough - to hell with this we are not going to live like this as a city.”
