Police: Body of missing teen swimmer recovered in Waukegan Harbor

The body of a teen-aged boy who went swimming in Waukegan Harbor Friday afternoon was recovered about 7:45 p.m.

The Waukegan Police Department was dispatched about 3:20 p.m. to 200 Seahorse Drive after the boy went into the water and could not be found, according to Waukegan police Cmdr. Joe Florip.

The boy, whose exact age was unknown, was last seen swimming in a boating channel in the harbor, police said. The boy was at the beach with his family.

Florip described the teenager as local to the area, but did not release his home town. He thanked first responders for their efforts, many of whom refused to take breaks as they searched, he said.

“They stayed at this until it was done,” Florip said. “It’s a tragedy.”
