Record snow gives way to frigid temperatures

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -- The Chicago area was slammed this weekend with the biggest snow storm in November in more than a hundred years. Parts of the area saw well over a foot of snow, while the downtown area saw a snow/rain mix that washed away any accumulation.

The snow was followed by bitterly cold temperatures, but that didn’t stop thousands of people who attended the Magnificent Mile Lights Festival on Saturday night. They bundled up and cradled hot beverages while taking in the parade and the one million lights lining the iconic route. Most were just happy the snow-rain mix didn’t put a damper on the holiday celebration.

“It was a little confusing.  It didn't know whether it wanted to be rain or snow. But it was really pretty when it was snow,” said Diana Richerson, who was dancing to the parade music to stay warm.

Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy said the winter mess may have impacted attendance at the lights festival.

“The crowds seem to be down a little bit from what we are accustomed to,” he said.

Mother Nature will continue to hit the Midwest hard on Sunday with wind chills in the teens.
