Chicago area residents should expect showers and thunderstorms throughout much of Saturday afternoon and early Sunday morning.

About 1 to 1:30 p.m., the stormy conditions are expected to start pushing through the area, with wind gusts reaching as high as 20 mph, according to the National Weather Service. Another round of showers and thunderstorms is then expected to affect the area until early Sunday morning.

Up to 2 inches of potentially heavy rainfall is expected during that time, the weather service said. In addition, some small hail could also pepper the area.

A hazardous weather outlook, in effect throughout Saturday, warned of an increased threat of flash flooding in parts of northern Illinois, the weather service said.
