Single mom killed in violent suburban crash

A deadly head on crash early Tuesday killed a 25-year-old single mother who was on her way to work. She leaves behind a young child.

The collision happened in the western suburb of Berwyn.

The victim has been identified by family on a GoFundMe page as Mayra Rivera -- a single mother of a 6-year-old boy.

The vehicles collided near Ogden and Ridgeland Aveues. Police say Rivera was driving a Pontiac west on Ogden. At the same time, police say, a Nissan being driven by a 29-year-old man, riding with a female passenger, was heading eastbound when his car crossed the center line and hit Rivera’s head on.

She was killed at the scene.

So far, police believe speed was a factor in the crash.

“A horrific accident. Terrible, tragic. I saw the pictures, too. It was definitely a high rate of speed. We have an accident reconstructionist working on reconstructing the accident. Hopefully we'll have an exact or approximate speed,” said Berwyn Police Chief Michael Cimaglia.

On Tuesday afternoon, Berwyn’s police chief said detectives were executing a number of search warrants. That included one to have the blood drawn on the 29-year-old driver of the Nissan.

Police say neither person in the Nissan carried identification.

The 29-year-old male driver of the Nissan and his female passenger were taken to hospitals and are expected to survive. They have not identified anyone because they have not yet been charged with a crime.

However, police say charges are pending.
