Suburban teen accidentally strikes, kills grandmother with minivan

A 79-year-old woman has died in suburban Chicago after her teenage grandson accidentally hit the gas pedal of her minivan and struck her, according to police.

Niles police say Kuem S. Cho died late Saturday at a Park Ridge hospital. Police say Cho gave her 13-year-old grandson the keys to the vehicle so he could help her put the vehicle into gear. Authorities said Cho walked up to the open driver's side door when the teen shifted the vehicle into reverse with his foot on the gas pedal instead of the brake.

Police say the vehicle backed up with the driver's side door open, striking Cho.

The Cook County medical examiner ruled the death an accident, citing multiple blunt force injuries. Police are investigating.
