Teen shot by police in South Chicago after refusing to drop gun

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News/ Sun Times Media Wire) - A 14-year-old boy was shot by Chicago Police late Thursday in the South Chicago neighborhood.

About 10:20 p.m., tactical officers in the South Chicago District heard a call of shots fired by two people on bicycles near the intersection of 89th and Escanaba, Area South Executive Officer Christopher Fletcher told reporters at the scene.

A short time later, the tactical officers then saw two people on bikes and stopped one of them to interview him, Fletcher said.

As the officers were talking to the teen when they noticed a bulge in his pocket, Fletcher said. As the officers started to get out of their vehicle, he fled.

The officers chased him to the 8900 block of South Escanaba. During their chase, they saw he now had a gun in his hand, Fletcher said.

After several attempts to stop him and get him to drop the gun, he refused, Fletcher said. He was then shot once in the leg.

The teen suspect was taken to Comer Children’s Hospital, a police source said. He expected to be OK. 

A gun was recovered at the scene.
