Cincinnati may declare Election Day a holiday

Two Cincinnati city council members are pushing to make Election Day a holiday for city workers.

Chris Seelbach and P.G. Sittenfeld shared their motion on Twitter Sunday.

It asks the City Administrator to report on the feasibility of making the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November a paid holiday for city employees.

The motion said the idea of a holiday is an effort to fight "[l]egislation related to the issue of voting rights [that has] too often focused on creating hurdles to the ballot box, rather than finding commonsense solutions that encourage every voter to participate in the democratic process -- whether that person is a Republican, Democrat, Independent or otherwise."

The city leaders of Sandusky, Ohio, recently voted to give city workers a paid day off on Election Day instead of Columbus Day.
