(FoxNews.com) - An unknown device detonated in a garbage can Saturday morning before runners were set to take part in a third annual Semper Five run that benefits marines and sailors.

Runners were expected to be near the Seaside Park area at the time the blast occurred but the 5k race had been delayed due to an unattended backpack, officials told CBS NY.

CBS NY reported that officials identified the device as a pipe bomb.
