Indiana University says police are searching for an armed woman who entered a convenience store near campus, prompting the school to issue an emergency alert.

University officials issued the alert early Friday, calling for people on campus to take shelter and lock their doors. About 40 minutes later, the school said the threat was no longer imminent. It says those on campus can resume normal routines but must remain vigilant.

IU spokeswoman Margie Smith-Simmons says Bloomington police are looking for the woman, who authorities said entered a Village Pantry with a handgun then fled in an unknown direction.

The university sent the original alert because that store is near campus, where about 30,000 students begin classes Monday.

Bloomington police did not return calls seeking comment.
