Southwest reporting cancellations, delays after technical glitch

- Southwest Airlines is reporting more than 200 cancellations nationwide Wednesday, the result of a technology outage that grounded flights Tuesday afternoon at Midway International Aiport.

As of 6:30 a.m., Southwest had canceled more than 221 flights nationwide and was continuing to manage flight disruptions cross their system, according to a statement posted on the airline’s website.

“Most of our systems are back online this morning following yesterday’s technology outages, but recovery will take some time,” according to the statement.

“We expect some cancelations and delays as we position aircraft and crews.”

As of 7:30 a.m., more than 40 flights had been canceled at Midway, though it was not clear if those were all Southwest flights. A few flights were also experiencing delays of about 25 minutes, according to the city’s Department of Aviation.

“Our employees are the best in the business, and they are working extremely hard to get you and your luggage to your destination,” according to Southwest’s statement.

“Thank you for hanging in there with us. We will have more information later regarding flexible rebooking, and we will continue to work with each and every affected customer to make this right.”
