Man fatally struck by Metra train last week in Elgin

A man who was hit and killed by a Metra train Wednesday afternoon in northwest suburban Elgin has been identified.

The collision involving outbound Metra District-West Line train #2219 happened about 3 p.m. between the Elgin and Big Timber stations, just north of the downtown area, according to Metra spokeswoman Meg Thomas-Reile.

Robert E. Knackstebt, 66, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Kane County coroner’s office. He was believed to be an Elgin resident.

The coroner’s office said Monday afternoon that the investigation is ongoing.
