Tammie Souza Blog: Watch ice form and melt on the Great Lakes

Check out this spectacular 18 second time lapse showing the freeze and thaw on the Great Lakes last winter.

Spring has begun and so has the yearly thaw of ice on the Great Lakes. While this year's ice was impressive it may still pale in comparison to last year. On March 6th, 2014 the Great Lakes reached it's greatest ice coverage. It was estimated by satellite that 92% of the lakes were frozen solid which was the 2nd greatest ice coverage in the past 40 years. The deepest of the Great Lakes is Superior. It had an ice cap of nearly three and a half feet. That thick ice shut down all shipping across the lakes for much of the winter. Click
