- A Chicago Police officer shot and seriously wounded a person who pointed a gun at him Monday night in the South Shore neighborhood.

About 9:30 p.m., the officer was sitting in his marked police vehicle after leaving a Family Dollar store, 2346 E. 79th St., when the person walked up and pointed a handgun at him, according to CPD News Affairs Sgt. Al Stinites. The officer then pulled out his own gun and fired a shot that struck the person.

The person was taken to a hospital and listed in serious but stable condition, Stinites said. A handgun was recovered at the scene.

The officer will be placed on 30-day administrative leave, per CPD policy. The Civilian Office of Police Accountability were on the scene investigating the shooting, Stinites said.
