SLEEPY HOLLOW, Ill. (FOX 32) - Two teens were stabbed in a home invasion this afternoon in west suburban Sleepy Hollow.
Police say early on, it was questionable whether the two victims would survive. By nightfall, police said it appears they will slowly recover. One is being treated at Advocate Sherman Hospital in Elgin. The other had to be airlifted to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge.
Their injuries are so severe, the suspect could be charged with attempted murder.
Sleepy Hollow police say the suspect was under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs so much so, that it’s unclear what motive he had if any when he walked into the unlocked home on Saratoga around 12:30 p.m. Monday.
“The door was open. The front door, it was a nice day here and the storm door is unlocked and the main door was open and he just walked in,” said Sleepy Hollow Police Chief James Linane.
Once inside, police say the suspect sexually assaulted a 19-year-old woman who’s a senior in high school. Police say he used a butcher knife to stab her and her 17-year-old brother when the boy tried to intervene. It’s a frightening story for those who live in a quiet neighborhood.
“And I started to like freak out a little bit, but I stayed calm to drive home, took the long way and just made sure everything was ok with her and my family,” said Riley Kenney, neighbor.
There’s a trail of blood leading from the house on Saratoga to others on the block – from the victims as they escaped, and from the suspect. He then walked into an unlocked garage door on Johnstown Road where he found a woman in her backyard.
“He walked in there demanding for her to drive him away from here,” said Angel Robles, who was working in the neighborhood.
Neighbors say the suspect threatened to kill the woman while holding up two butcher knives. She screamed and he left. Police are now busy processing evidence from the two crime scenes, and from other locations.
“This actually encompassed six different scenes with a lot of people involved so we are still putting that all together at this point,” said Chief Linane.
The suspect was stopped about a mile away in a field near Randall and Carrington. Police used a taser to make the arrest.
The Kane County Major Crimes Task Force is joining Sleepy Hollow Police in the investigation. The suspect is said to be about 30 years old and is from the area. Charges are pending.
