State police are looking to question a passenger who left the scene after a woman was shot while riding in a car early Friday on the Dan Ryan Expressway.

A car was struck by gunfire just after 2 a.m. as it headed north on I-94 near 79th Street, according to a statement from Illinois State Police.

The driver then left the expressway and stopped the car in the first block of West 59th Street, Chicago police said.

A 24-year-old woman who was riding in the back seat was shot multiple times and was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center with injuries that were not thought to be life threatening, authorities said.

The driver, a 32-year-old man, was not injured, according to state police. Another male passenger left the scene before investigators arrived.

State police are seeking to talk to the passenger as well as anyone who may have witnessed the shooting. Anyone with information is asked to call (847) 294-4400.

All northbound lanes of the Dan Ryan were shut down between 79th and 75th streets while authorities investigated. They were reopened at 7:11 a.m.
