18 shot, 2 fatally, Sunday in city shootings

CHICAGO (SUN TIMES MEDIA WIRE) - At least 18 people were shot, two of them fatally, Sunday in gun violence across Chicago in a 24-hour period.

The wounded included a 17-year-old boy walking to the Red Line, four people in a single shooting in Little Village and a man walking near Grant Park downtown.

The last homicide happened in the Marquette Park neighborhood on the Southwest Side. About 9:20 p.m., a 26-year-old man was standing on the sidewalk in the 6500 block of South Maplewood when a male walked up and fired shots, Chicago Police said.

The man was shot in the head and was taken to Holy Cross Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office hasn’t released details about the death.

The second homicide claimed the life of 19-year-old Kenneth L. Hill.  He was shot to death Sunday morning in the South Side Englewood neighborhood. Hill was standing on the sidewalk about 6:15 a.m. when someone shot him in the head in the 5800 block of South Peoria Street in Englewood, according to authorities. Hill was taken to University of Chicago Medical Center, where he died. He lived on the same block as the shooting.

In the latest nonfatal shooting Sunday, a 16-year-old boy was wounded in the Lawndale neighborhood on the West Side. The boy was standing in a vacant lot about 11:50 p.m. in the 800 block of South California Avenue, police said. Someone walked up and fired shots, grazing the boy in his left leg. He was taken to Stroger Hospital, where his condition stabilized.

About 11 p.m., a 41-year-old man was shot in the Humboldt Park neighborhood on the West Side. The man was standing on a sidewalk with a group of people in the 1000 block of North Drake Avenue, police said. Someone walked up and fired shots in their direction. The man was shot in his right shoulder and was taken to Stroger Hospital. His condition had stabilized.

Four people were wounded in a shooting in the Little Village neighborhood on the South Side. The group was standing on the street when a male walked up and fired shots at 9:27 p.m. in the 2200 block of South Sacramento, according to police.

A 21-year-old man was shot in the chest and a 30-year-old man was shot in the left arm and hip. They were in serious condition. A 34-year-old woman was in good condition with a gunshot wound to the right leg, police said. A 20-year-old man had a gunshot wound in his left leg.

Other shootings Sunday included:

  • an 18-year-old man and a 17-year-old boy wounded about 4:20 p.m. near the CTA Red Line 87th station in West Chatham, according to police. The boy was shot in his abdomen and was in serious condition. The 18-year-old was shot in his leg.
  • About 6:30 a.m., a 23-year-old woman was shot in the West Garfield Park neighborhood. She was fighting with another female when someone inside an SUV shot her in the buttocks, according to police.
  • About 5:55 a.m., a man was shot and seriously wounded in the Washington Park neighborhood. The 24-year-old was walking on the sidewalk in the 5900 block of South King Drive when he was shot multiple times, according to police. He was in serious condition.
  • About 1:40 a.m., a 28-year-old was walking with a group of people near Grant Park when he started arguing with someone in the 600 block of South Lake Shore Drive, police said. The person pulled out a gun and shot the man his back. He was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in serious condition.
  • About 1:30 a.m., a 26-year-old woman was shot in the Logan Square neighborhood on the Northwest Side. The woman was walking down the street when she heard gunshots in the 2000 block of North Milwaukee Avenue, according to police. She was struck in her left foot. Her condition stabilized.
  • About the same time, a 25-year-old man showed up at Stroger Hospital with a gunshot wound to his leg. He was shot in the West Garfield Park neighborhood.
  • About 12:50 a.m., a 24-year-old woman and man were shot in the West Woodlawn neighborhood. The woman was shot in her hand, and the man was shot in his leg, police said.
  • In the first shooting Sunday, a man was shot and then refused to be treated by medical professionals. About 12:45 a.m., the 49-year-old man showed up at Stroger Hospital with a wound to his leg. After refusing to give details of the shooting, the man walked out of the hospital and refused medical attention, according to police.
