Detainee escapes custody, sheriff's officer fires shots
SUN-TIMES MEDIA WIRE - A Cook County Jail detainee briefly escaped custody outside of a courthouse Thursday afternoon, prompting a sheriff’s officer to open fire in the Fuller Park neighborhood on the South Side.
About 4:30 p.m., 18-year-old Jordan Cook was waiting to board a Cook County Department of Corrections bus outside the county courthouse at 155 W. 51st St., when he broke out of line and ran away, according to Sophia Ansari, a spokeswoman for the sheriff’s office.
During the pursuit, a sheriff’s officer fired two shots, but no one was injured, Ansari said.
Chicago Police officers arrested the man about 4:40 p.m. near West 51st and South State streets, police said.
Cook, of the 11900 block of South Lowe, was in custody on felony charges of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and reckless discharge of a firearm, court records show. He was also charged with misdemeanor counts of possession of cannabis and possession of ammunition.
On June 19, Judge Donald Panarese Jr. ordered Cook held at Cook County Jail on a $250,000 bond, court records show. He was in court Thursday on a motion to reduce bond.
Police said new charges are pending.
