Detectives believe murder of Chicago family was domestic related

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) - FOX 32 News has learned that investigators now believe they know why the Martinez family from Gage Park was killed.

Five of the family members, including two children, were stabbed to death, and their mother was shot and killed on February 4 inside their home in Gage Park.

The focus of the police investigation is now on Maria Martinez, who is the mother of the two young boys. Detectives believe the motive is domestic related, which was one of the early theories. But now, it appears it may be a possible love triangle-type scenario that prompted someone to kill Martinez and five of her family members.

You will recall that Maria Martinez was the only one of the victims who was shot to death. Her mother and father, brother and two sons were all stabbed to death in the Gage Park home where they all lived. The bodies were discovered three weeks ago today.

Martinez had a nasty break up with her recent boyfriend, who has been described to me as the jealous kind but one who loved the two young boys.

A source told FOX 32 that Martinez also had other men in her life. Police have looked at her cell phone records and they suggest Martinez may have been trying to make some men jealous of others.

A source who knows the ex-boyfriend told FOX 32 police had gotten a DNA swab from him last week, but it is not clear yet if he is considered one of the people who may be involved.

FOX 32’s sources said at this stage of the investigation, police do not consider anyone a person of interest or a suspect. Detectives are still in the information gathering stage and the process of elimination stage when it comes to people they want to talk to.
