Woman, 18, killed by stray bullet in Calumet City

An 18-year-old woman died after she was hit with a stray bullet while inside a home in south suburban Calumet City on Saturday.

Jessica Rogers was inside a home about 10:25 p.m. in the 700 block of Newell Avenue when a bullet struck her in the neck, according to Calumet City police. Rogers was shot when an unknown person fired a single shot into the house.

Rogers, who lived in the 3600 block of Peach Grove in Hazel Crest, was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where she was pronounced dead at 4:50 p.m. Sunday, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

No one was in custody, police said.
