CHICAGO (Fox 32 News) - R. Kelly was spending a third night at the Cook County Jail on Sunday because it has taken since Friday to get the money together to post bond, his attorney said.
Steve Greenberg said that as of Sunday evening, Kelly does have the money, but has to wait until banks open on Monday morning. Kelly must post $100,000 to get out of jail, and Greenberg said he simply does not have that kind of money laying around. He said that Kelly has fallen on hard times and owes $166,000 in unpaid rent at his recording studio and $161,000 in unpaid child support.
“In the last six months or so, he’s had some difficulty. There’s a [child support] judgment," Greenberg said. "He’s gonna pay that judgment off. That’s absolutely nothing to do with bond or release.”
Kelly will go before a judge on Monday morning. He is not being kept with the general jail population. Instead, he is in the hospital section, though his attorney said he is not sick.
"It’s easier for the jail I think to keep him in a secure setting," Greenberg said. "That’s the easiest place. He’s not there because of any medical reason. He’s not suicidal or anything like that, I think it’s just easier for the sheriff.”
Kelly is charged with ten counts relating to incidents with three underage girls and one woman between 1998 and 2010.
More than ten years ago, he was acquitted of similar abuse of a minor that was also videotaped. The victims' attorney believes witnesses in that trial were paid off.
[We’re gonna do everything in our power to guard against it to make sure that 2019 is not a repeat of 2008 and the trial on these very serious charges is not rigged," victims' attorney Michael Avenatti said.
