Coalition gathers 250,000 signatures calling for resignation of Emanuel, Alvarez

CHICAGO, IL - A broad coalition of national and local organizations, including ColorOfChange, MoveOn.org, Democracy for America, CREDO, and the Chicago Black Roots Alliance will deliver over 250,000 petition signatures to Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez demanding their immediate resignations for failing to hold the Chicago Police Department accountable for the killing of Laquan McDonald.

"Anita Alvarez and Rahm Emanuel have had years to clean up the well known abuses of the Chicago Police Department and have both failed to take action. Despite killing more black people than any department in the country, Chicago police officers are almost never disciplined or charged for use of excessive force", said Color of Change Senior Campaign Director Scott Roberts.

Despite both having access to the video of Laquan McDonald’s brutal killing for more than a year, both Alvarez and Emanuel fought intensely to keep it hidden from the public until a judge forced its release. Their attempts to cover up this heinous crime have lost them the confidence of a majority of Chicago residents and their immediate resignations are the only way to restore that trust."

With a combined membership of 14 million, ColorOfChange, MoveOn, Democracy for America, and CREDO represent the progressive base that fuels the Democratic Party. We cannot support politicians who fail to hold police accountable out of political expedience or a lack of appreciation for the worth of Black lives.
