Man killed in workplace crane accident in Carol Stream, officials say

A man died after an incident involving a crane at his workplace in Chicago’s western suburbs, officials said.

What we know:

The incident occurred about noon Tuesday in the 400 block of St. Paul Boulevard at Specialty Rolled Metals LLC in Carol Stream.

First responders arrived and found the 55-year-old employee had attempted to load a large metal spool onto a flatbed truck using an overhead crane. The crane failed, causing the spool to fall and strike the worker, officials said.

Despite rescue efforts, the man died from his injuries. His identity has not been released.

What's next:

Carol Stream police have opened a noncriminal death investigation. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration has been notified and is conducting a separate investigation.
