A crash that slowed the morning commute on the Eisenhower Expressway followed a police chase that began after suspicious vehicles were spotted in west suburban Addison, according to a Villa Park police update.

I-290 police chase, crash

What we know:

Addison police officers saw two vehicles in a business district along Lake Street at about 4:34 a.m. Thursday. Police believed the vehicles were connected to commercial burglaries. Both vehicles fled when officers tried to stop them.

Police said one vehicle was disabled with a tire deflation device. Its occupants got into the second vehicle, which continued fleeing and later eluded Addison officers.

Villa Park police located that vehicle near North Avenue and Route 83 and tried to stop it, according to the department. The vehicle continued, and another tire deflation device was deployed. It eventually crashed on I-290 near 25th Avenue.

Seven people ran from the vehicle, police said. A coordinated response led to five people being taken into custody. Police also recovered multiple weapons and items believed to be connected to the burglary from the crashed vehicle.

Traffic impact

The crash blocked multiple eastbound lanes on I-290 near 25th Avenue, and traffic heading into Chicago was heavily delayed.

Illinois State Police said all lanes reopened around 6:05 p.m.

What we don't know:

It is unclear whether the remaining two people who fled have been located.
