CDC: E. coli, Salmonella outbreak tied to alfalfa sprouts

CDC and public health officials in several states are investigating a multistate outbreak of E. coli and Salmonella infections linked to alfalfa sprouts on August 26, 2026.

A Chilean fruit supplier has expanded a recall of its frozen organic berries, which were sold in Walmarts and Trader Joe's stores across the United States.

The products, made by Frutas y Hortalizas del Sur S.A., were linked to an E. coli outbreak that infected 17 people and hospitalized six in Florida and Georgia, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). There were no reported deaths.

The company updated its recall Friday to include additional lots of its Great Value frozen Organic Triple Berry Blend and Great Value frozen Organic Blueberries.

The Florida Department of Health first notified the CDC of the E. coli outbreak in July 2026.

On Sept. 21, the CDC closed the investigation into the outbreak.
