16-year-old Chicago boy found fatally shot in head in Woodlawn

Area Central detectives have opened a homicide investigation after a teenage boy was found dead Thursday afternoon with a gunshot wound to the head in the South Side Woodlawn neighborhood.

Damarcus Williams, 16, was found shot in the head at 1:12 p.m. in the 6100 block of South Evans, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Williams, who lived in the 6100 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue, was pronounced dead at the scene at 1:22 p.m., the medical examiner’s office said. An autopsy showed he died of a gunshot wound to the head and ruled the death a homicide.

Police initially said the teenager may have accidentally shot himself, but later reclassified the death as a homicide. A person of interest was being questioned Thursday night, but no charges had been filed as of Friday afternoon.
