Chicago-area college student assaulted woman on campus, police say

A student at a north suburban college allegedly attacked a woman on the school’s campus last Friday, police said.

Brutal attack

What we know:

Luca Vulpescu, 22, was arrested on charges of aggravated battery (strangulation), two charges of battery and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, according to Lake Forest police.

Vulpescu was arrested Friday after police responded to a report of a female student being attacked on campus. He was later identified as the suspect and taken into custody.

Authorities said the attack happened in Vulpescu's dorm room, and the victim sustained minor injuries. The victim identified Vulpescu as a student mentor at the college.

Vulpescu appeared in court Saturday for an initial hearing and was released on the condition that he have no contact with the victim and not leave the state. 

The charges filed against him were for non-detainable offenses, police said.

Vulpescu was also banned from the Lake Forest College campus.

What they're saying:

"On late Thursday, February 27, the College was made aware of an alleged assault involving two students. Once the College was made aware of the alleged assault, College officials took immediate action, including notifying the Lake Forest Police Department. Law enforcement responded and the alleged assailant was arrested on Friday, February 28. 

"Since the arrest, the student was released from police custody on Saturday morning and the College banned the student from campus, pending further investigation. 

"A member of our community reportedly did not uphold the values and standards we expect at this College. Ensuring a safe environment for every student is our highest priority. This matter will be thoroughly investigated, and we will fully cooperate with law enforcement and the judicial process. Any individual found responsible will face the College’s highest sanctions. 

"The safety and well-being of our students are paramount, and we remain fully committed to upholding that responsibility," Lake Forest College said in a statement. 

"I read barely anything about it. I was kinda shocked that it happened," one student said.

What's next:

Police are investigating this as an isolated incident, saying they have no knowledge of other victims or allegations involving the suspect.

Vulpescu's next court date is scheduled for March 24.

The investigation is ongoing.
