Woman found dead in Chatham, no suspects in custody

A woman was found dead Sunday morning in Chatham on the South Side.

The woman, whose age wasn’t immediately known, was found outside unresponsive about 9 a.m. in the 8200 block of South Vernon Avenue, Chicago police said.

She was found with "apparent trauma to the neck area" and pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Officers spent more than eight hours canvassing the alley and the front of the building on Sunday, focusing on a second-floor apartment.

Neighbor Paula Jackson said she heard gunshots around 10 p.m. Saturday, but it's unknown if it's connected with this case.

No suspects are in custody as of yet.
